Wedding Guide Lingerie
Queen Victoria created the tradition of wearing white as the colour of our bridal dress when she donned a white wedding gown to marry German Prince, Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha on 21 February 1840 at the age of 21.
Victoria’s dress was a, comparatively simple satin wedding gown adorned with Honiton lace. This Royal wedding dress, as well as, gowns worn by other royal brides have been displayed in exhibitions and have been reproduced (Madam Tussauds wax museum, for example). Surely, even, Queen Victoria, who was not easily amused, would have been delighted that her wedding gown would still be causing so much interest, nearly one hundred and seventy years after her marriage.
Little is known about the bridal lingerie that Queen Victoria wore for her marriage and, perhaps, that is as it should be because, even, if you are Queen of England, your wedding underwear should be a matter for you and your new husband (and your dressers, your ladies in waiting, etc).
Victoria and the Victorian era epitomises straight laced ideas and attitudes on everything from how long the death of a loved one should be mourned to the correct etiquette to display for any situation. Queen Victoria’s bridal lingerie may well be a closely guarded secret, but, not all of Queen Victoria’s underwear has remained so.
A pair of bloomers owned and worn by HRH Queen Victoria, as well as, a nightdress and chemise, that had been passed down to the family of a former lady in waiting to the Queen were put up for sale at an auction in Derby in 2008.
How Victoria, with her exacting moral standards, would have viewed the fact that her underwear was on display for the world to see, can only be imagined and how much worse she would have felt that her deeply personal bridal lingerie was exhibited to the world. Worse yet, was Victorian underwear was better known for its functionality rather than its beauty.
Modern day brides are more fortunate with the bridal lingerie being available in luxury styles and fabrics that are as good to look at as they are to wear.
Sophie and Grace supply bridal lingerie from leading wedding underwear designers and, if they were to be displayed, would look absolutely, breathtakingly gorgeous, unlike Queen Victoria’s 50 inch waist cotton knickers.
